IMD 3 at the University of Louisville Announces the Recipient of the IMD3 Graduate Research Fellowship
he Faculty of the Institute for Molecular Diversity & Drug Design is pleased to announce that Bin Hong has received the IMD 3 Graduate Research Fellowship to work in the laboratory of his mentor, Dr. Kyung A. Kang, in the Department of Chemical Engineering. Bin received his Bachelor's Degree in Polymer Engineering from Nanjing University , China , and a Master's Degree in Materials Science from Beijing University of Chemical Technology, China, prior to his study at the University of Louisville . His M.S. thesis focused on the preparation, characterization, and properties of copolymer latexes of polyacrylate-siloxane. He received Bayer scholarship and Zhang, Fengzhi fellowship in the studies for his Master's degree. In 2001, Bin was awarded as a Grosscurth Graduate Fellow in the Speed School of Engineering to purse his Ph.D. degree in Chemical Engineering with Dr. Kang. The project of his dissertation is to develop the fluorescence enhancing, metallic nanoparticle reagent for highly sensitive, fluorophore mediated, fiber-optic, multi-cardiac marker sensing system for rapid heart attack diagnosis and prognosis. His project covers bio-optics, molecular simulation, surface characterization, inorganic synthesis, medical and biological science, mathematic modeling, and application of nanotechnology and Micro-electro-mechanical System (MEMs), etc. During the period of his studies at UofL, he received Engineer's Day award, IMD 3 travel award, Biomedical Engineering Society travel award, Sigma Xi Grants-in-Aid award, and the honors from Sigma Xi Scientific Society and Tau Beta Pi Engineering Society. He has made 18 presentations in the national/international conferences, including the ones by Biomedical Engineering Society, American Institute of Chemical Engineers, and International Society on Oxygen Transport to Tissue. He has one journal paper in press based on his work. In addition to the research activities, he was also involved in the Louisville community activities as a volunteer of Derby Parade or fund raising, judge of International Science Fair, and president of student organization. _______________________________________________________
